Hello, let me introduce myself.
My name is Delfina Bright, though most people know me as Delfie or Grammy.
At 63 years old, I sometimes ask myself, “What am I doing?” — but then I remember that life doesn’t stop just because we reach a certain age. In fact, for me, I’m working the on the legacy I choose to leave behind. I never want to be known for that sad bitter lady. But a woman who stood her ground and fought!
Seven months ago, I moved to Rochester, Minnesota from Olympia, Washington, after spending more than 30 years in the Pacific Northwest. Life there was wonderful… until it wasn’t. When it became clear that a change was needed, I trusted God, of course questioning Him all along the way. But here I am!
Before moving, I had already begun my education at South Sound Community College with one clear goal in mind: to open a business. I knew better than to jump in blindly. I wanted to understand how a business truly works — from the ground up. After relocating to Rochester, I transferred all of my credits to Rochester Community and Technical College, where I continue my studies today. I hadn’t been in school since the 80’s I thought Math would be the death of me, thank God I don’t have to do the math requirements!
While working toward my degree, I realized I didn’t want to wait any longer to gain real-world experience or to connect with my new community. Smileys Adventures was born from that realization.
Some offerings, like the Manners Class, are still evolving. While the cooking portion — my favorite part — isn’t included in pop-up events just yet, that is something I look forward to bringing back once Smileys Adventures has a permanent home. (That chapter is still to be written.)
Where Smileys Adventures truly shines is Grammy’s Cookie Party.
These events are rooted in traditions from my own home, shared with my children, neighborhood kids, school classrooms, and Sunday school groups. Creating, baking, crafting, and celebrating together has always been at the heart of my family life. Being around children isn’t just something I enjoy — it’s honestly my secret ingredient for staying young at heart.
I’ll leave you with a short story.
When my daughter was very young, I once watched a televised ballet performance featuring over a hundred children under the age of five, all dancing together in perfect synchronization. I was amazed. In that moment, I thought, “Game on.”
From then on, our lives were filled with creativity and adventure — Play-Doh, paint, glitter, camping trips, white-water rafting, music festivals, road trips, and unforgettable memories. Childhood was meant to be explored, celebrated, and lived fully.
That is exactly what Smileys Adventures is all about.
I invite you to allow your child join us on a Smileys Adventure — a place where creativity, kindness, and joy come first. And as always, no child will ever be turned away because of financial hardship. That’s simply how we roll.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story.
Warmly,
Delfie
